Make a DIY Telscopic Sight for Rifles

I was wondering whether it is possible to make a do-it-yourself telescopic sight, similar to older (non-refractory)- rifle scopes (ie WM Malcolm, Chapman-James, LM Amidon, ... ). See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telescopic_sight#History

Also, magnification should be settable (ie by rotating more lenses into the scope), aswell as the range (inclination). Finally, it may be made using less expensive materials (ie plastic tubes, ...) but cradle-to-cradle materials are nonetheless preferred.

I don't have a link handy, but on the American Single Shot Rifle Association (ASSRA) web forum, there was some quite good discussion about building a rifle scope. I think that the specs posted here may be a bit ambitious, but building a 10x to 15x scope does not seem to be overly difficult for someone who knows optics better than I!
